IN THERAPY

YOUR FIRST CONSULTATION

What to expect from your therapist

During your first session, your therapist answers any and all questions you have, so that you understand the therapeutic process fully.

When you’re with your therapist, it should feel like a “good fit” and you should feel comfortable talking to them.

Keep in mind that psychotherapy usually requires multiple visits – it equips you with life-long solutions, not a quick fix.

During your first session, you will discuss:

  • Your symptoms
  • What brought you to therapy
  • What changes you would like to make in your life
  • Your history, including childhood experiences, relationships (family, friends, romantic), current living situation, work, goals and aspirations.

By the end of the first session, your therapist should be able to give you a compassionate summary of your concerns and suggest potential treatment strategies and steps to take to meet your goals.

what to expect from yourself

Every person experiences therapy differently. With the correct therapist supporting you, and a willingness to be open and honest with yourself, therapy helps you become the person you want to be.

Therapy is a significant investment of time, money and energy. To make the most of it, you have to make time in your life to work in therapy and get the results you want.

Your therapist is there to help you manage changes in your life with strategies, gentle feedback, skill development, resources, and emotional support.

Each step forward makes the next step more achievable and brings you closer to your goal.

The rewards of therapy increase over time as you decrease your stress, anger, confusion or sadness and increase your confidence, clarity and happiness. It can be hard, but ultimately it will be rewarding.
